lonely night@Mumbai

Call for application 2008 Summer (please help to spread the words)

Each summer, Dream Corps sends teams of volunteers from overseas and China to help implement its projects at the program sites. At the beginning of the Summer Volunteer Program, volunteers will participate in a four-days training in Beijing. During the training, volunteers will break into six teams. Each team will then travel to their program sites to work about three weeks. After the work is completed, volunteers will return to Beijing to share their experiences with other volunteers at the Annual Forum.

This program is an exciting opportunity for students, researchers, and young professionals interested in international development, rural education, and the non-profit sector in China. Although spoken Chinese is not strictly required, we prioritize volunteers with superior spoken (Mandarin) Chinese upon selection. Previously, our volunteers are mainly undergraduate and graduate students from the US, Canada and China.

Third week in Italy

Three weeks have passed since I arrived Rome. I guess it's time to write something before memory fades.

The sunny September days with low humidity are perfect for walking. Taking any of the three streets originated from Piazza del Popolo (the biggest square in Rome), one can easily start “Alice adventures in Wonderland”. What amazes me most is how perfectly ancientness and modernity are combined here. The fashion boutiques fit so well with the surrounding middle age constructions as if they have been there forever. It’s a complete different atmosphere. No one is ever in a hurry. The cafés are my favorite pit stop place. You will probably also get good chances to practice Italian listening skill since this is where the Italians socialize. By the way, you never ask for a “coffee to go” here. This is something that Italians have never heard of. In fact, Italians never eat or drink while they are walking since it distorts their value of “la bella figura” (the good impression). The Starbucks founders received their inspiration from the Italian coffee culture, but they have never tried to enter the Italian market. The reason is obvious: Italians are reluctant to change their ways of living and the fast drink culture will not receive the popularity that it did in other countries.

(Posted some pictures to share with you my first taste of Italy)

Comments from past volunteers

Liu Da, Duke University, 2004 volunteer
"I've always wanted to devote myself to improving the education standard in rural China. In the past summer, Dream Project offered me this invaluable opportunity to participate in their pilot program in Yun Nan province of China. I spent three most memorable weeks of my life with the children there learning what I could not have learned elsewhere. It was a truly exciting experience – being with the children from sunrise to sunset and seeing how they live their lives. It was also inspiring to work with other volunteers who share the same beliefs, it made me think that we together can make a change."

Caryn Lai, U.C. Berkeley, 2005 volunteer
"I think our home visits to impoverished households left the biggest impression on me.  It is one thing to read about poverty or see poverty in the 1st world but an entirely different situation to see poverty in the rural 3rd world.  Seeing the students outside of school and instead in their familial context was a humbling experience.  In many of these families, education is the trade-off between food, medicine, and other living expenses.  Many of these children have parents away and live with their grandparents.  Some students cried during the interviews and you could see how much the guilt or feelings of loss affected them.  Coming from a country where education is free through high school, it is amazing that these students struggle to finish elementary school.

Julian Xue, McGill University, 2006 volunteer
"
H aving had some experience with NGO's, the more I worked with Dream Corps the more I realized that as a budding grass-root organization it was exceptional in the independence and power it granted its volunteer teams, in the vision and dedication of its leaders, in the idealism and sophistication of its members. Here I have met a group of people who understands in the one core way necessary to change the world – we are in pain. Together we will strive to make the vision of equality of education come about, because if it does not happen, then it hurts – hurts us emotionally, hurts the world materialistically.

DC trip

Finally got a chance to visit the capital city of the United States. It's not the best season to visit D.C, but considering most of the cost was covered, I didn't feel like a fool to do this. And at least we got a good tour guide who apparently has too much to tell us. Too bad the White House decided not to allow visitors after Sep. 11. Oh well, it didn't appear magnificent to me from the distant anyway.
There is annual Cherry Blossom in Washington D.C in early April. I will probably make another better trip there during that time. I have got a few pics to share.

update

Oh well, a new semester started again. Within a blink of time, two weeks have passed. What I have found so far is that I am getting increasingly bored at classes and disgusted by American food. I know i need some change in my life now. So my next semester will probably be spent in Italy, although I wish I could even stay there a whole year.
I went on a brief trip to California over the winter. San diego is a beautiful place. I should have stayed in Los Anglese longer to explore more of the Hollywood. Anyway, I think California would be my first choice if I were to choose a place to live in the States.
Posted some pics to share with everyone.
